Coaches
Senior Coach - Maggie Squires
Maggie has been involved in archery since 1978. She has shot for GB internationally in field archery since 1992; and represented England in target archery at the Euronations in 2000. Maggie was involved in coaching at GB level in various capacities from 1996 to 2010, including as an assisstant Junior Coach for the GB Junior Squad from 2007-08.
Maggie began coaching at the club in 2010 as a County Coach, she has since qualified as a Senior Coach in 2018; within the club she is responsible for running a beginners course for the new members at the start of the year and preparing them for shooting in competitions. She also provides advice and coaching to more experienced members throughout the year.
Level 2 Coach - Laura McCartney
Laura graduated in 2017 with a degree in Computer Science and Mathematics, and completed her a PhD in Computer Science in 2021, she is now an alumni member of the club. Laura joined the club as a novice in 2014 and has competed for the club at many competitions, initially shooting recurve, but more recently as barebow. She was part of the the BUCS Indoor Champs novice team in 2015 where she won a bronze medal. Laura has also served on the committee as Treasurer (2015-16), Welfare Officer (2018-19) and Chair (2019-20); and is also the Comunications and Publicity Officer on the L&RCAA Committee.
Laura has been a qualified Level 1 Coach since 2016 and passed her Level 2 assessment in 2019.
Level 1 Coach - Rebecca Cusworth
Rebecca joined the club in 2022 as an associate member, having previously been a member of Coventry University Archery Club, which she joined in 2017 as a novice. Rebecca shoots recurve, she is the Development Officer on the Leicestershire and Rutland Archery Association committee and has shot on the county team on since 2021.
Rebecca has been a qualified Level 1 Coach since 2019, and is currently training to become a Development Coach.
Session Coach - Katie Axup
Katie is a mathematics student, she joined the club as a novice in October 2021 shooting recurve and barebow for a month before choosing longbow. Katie won a gold medal at BUCS Indoors and Outdoors, as well as BUTTS Ultimate Archer.
Favourite archery moment was winning the 2022 BUCS outdoor head to heads, borrowing someone elses longbow after her string gave up.
Katie has been a qualified Session Coach since 2023.
Session Coach - Tom Cram
Tom is an alumni member, having graduated in 2013 with a degree in Computing and Management, and now works at Merlin Archery. He has been shooting since 1999 and has previously served as Club Chair 2009-11, 2012-13, Equipment Officer 2011-12, Alumni Officer 2014-16 and also maintains the club's website (2012 - present); he is also the Webmaster on the L&RCAA committee. Tom shoots a recurve bow and has represented the club and the Leicestershire and Ruland county team at many competitions, and has won several county and East Midlands regional championship titles.
Favourite archery moment: winning BUTC in 2012, giving LSAC its first national title since 1998, video available here.
Tom has been a qualified Session Coach since 2023.
Session Coach - Lucy Hubbert
Lucy is studying for a degree in Graphic Design. She joined the club as an experienced archer and has been shooting for roughly ten years - predominantly barebow but spent six months in her fresher year at LSAC as recurve before changing back. Lucy also does NFAS field archery where she has won numerous medals as a junior including National 3D silver twice. Lucy also serves on the committee as Media Officer, a role she has held since 2022.
Favourite archery moment: Changing back over to barebow half way through freshers year, but also being proud to get through BUCS outdoors despite injury.
Lucy has been a qualified Session Coach since 2023.
Session Coach - Kat James
Kat is an alumni member and started shooting in 2019. She shoots a recurve bow and is currently working towards her first Master Bowman score outdoors. She came 2nd at the East Midlands Archery Society (EMAS) indoor championships in 2021 and currently holds the title of Lieutenant of Sherwood Forest after shooting the second highest recurve score at the Golden Arrow shoot in Nottingham.
Favourite archery moment: either shooting a 6 gold end at 70m for the first time at Bowmen of Glen WA70m, or watching my first practice arrow at the second day of the British Target Champs fly nicely towards the target, before seeing it get caught by the wind and blown off course to land between my boss and the next one over!
Kat has been a qualified Session Coach since 2023.
Session Coach - Jason "Twinkle" Jibrail
Twinkle is an Electronics MEng graduate and alumni member who started shooting in 2014. He shoots a recurve bow and is a Master Bowman. Twinkle has held the title "Captain of Sherwood Forest" for the past two years.
Favourite archery moment: The moment just after you release an arrow, but before it's hit the target. If the shot feels nice then that split second is bliss. Also, when we played a round called "Cardboard of Steel" (ask Ben).
Twinkle has been a qualified Session Coach since 2023.
Session Coach - Hari Patel
Hari is studying for a degree in Product Design and Technology. He joined as a novice in 2021, shooting recurve. He competed in several of the BUTTS and LSAC events, gaining medals at many and earned a bronze medal at BUCS Indoor qualifiers and qualified for BUCS Indoor Finals in his novice year. Hari also served on the committee for 2022-23 as Development Officer for the club.
Favourite archery moment: Qualifying for BUCS Indoors.
Hari has been a qualified Session Coach since 2023.
Session Coach (training) - Kieran Curson
Kieran is currently studying for a PhD in Thin Film Solar Cells; he originally joined the club in 2019 when studying for his master’s degree in Materials. He shoots recurve and has competed for the club at many events as part of the gents experienced recurve team. Kieran also serves on the committee as Development Officer.
Kieran is currently training to be a Session Coach.
Session Coach (training) - Florence Levitt
Florence joined the club as an experienced archer in 2022 studying Economics and Management. She has been shooting recurve for 8 years and has competed in competitions up to national level, getting a silver medal in the under 21s Junior National Indoor Championships, as well as shooting for Cambridgeshire county as a junior; she is also the current Leicestershire and Rutland County Outdoor Champion. Florence is also on the committee as Equipment Officer.
Florence is currently training to be a Session Coach.
